The instrument
Romantic warmth, classical foundation
The organ's voice is warm and blended in the romantic tradition, but it rests on classical principles: careful scaling and a clear relationship among its stops and divisions. The result is an instrument built first to accompany worship, choirs and congregational singing, and versatile enough to play a wide range of organ literature well.
Its pipes are made largely of high-tin metal, and the windchests are slider and pallet, with no leather to wear out.

The cases
Designed for this room
John-Paul Buzard designed the two freestanding cases to follow the roof lines of the chancel and to echo the shape of the central stained glass window. Their angles are drawn from the window and roofline, so the organ looks as if it has always belonged there.
The polished tin pipes in the facades are not for show. They include working Pedal stops: the Open Bass, Principal and Violoncello.
History
How the organ came to Hayes Barton
The Sanctuary's earlier organ, a three-manual Austin dedicated in November 1956, was tucked into chambers on either side of the choir with no pipes in view. As the congregation planned a renovation of the Sanctuary, an organ committee heard Buzard's Opus 29 at All Saints Episcopal Church in Atlanta. That visit led to a new Buzard instrument for Hayes Barton, with its pipes in full view.
The organ was part of a larger renovation of the Sanctuary that also improved its acoustics and quieted its air conditioning, so the instrument and the voices it accompanies can be heard at their best.
